Good food - Poor service On our recent overnight trip to Manhattan we chose Aquavit for our fine dining spot. Before dinner we stopped at Bar Amercain and had friendly helpful service. When we arrived at Aquavit we felt like we were in a morgue. The bartender was all business and wanted to be somewhere else. The waiter was downright rude. We had the full tasting menu with the wine pairing. While most of food was outstanding the entire experience was tainted everytime the waiter showed up. He was Indian and spoke broken English. So understanding anything about each course or the wine was next to impossible. If you are in it 'just' for the food then try Aquavit out. But if you enjoy a whole dining experience then pass on this one.

What a great treat to have some true Scandinavia flavors. I come to Aquavit every time I am in NYC and that is about once every year or so my first time was in 2006. The current chef has taken the menu to new levels. It was great before and its even better now. We did the four course tasting menu which was really good and I loved being able to choose our courses. The Aquavit is also amazing! Try the espresso can't go wrong. The staff seem pretty new. It is worth going to the restaurant just for the ambiance as the decor is really cool. I just can't say enough about this place and feel like it is a hidden gem in NYC.

For the money, you can have better meals The herring starters and the vodka assortment were great, and so were the drinks in the bar. However, service was mediocre and the main courses failed to live up to the standards you would expect in this price range. My waitress failed to realize that a Carbernet Franc might have a sulphur precipitate and promptly poured my glass to the last drops, ruining the wine. The Beef Rydberg was barely acceptable; onions were over-cooked and the meat was not impressive. For a $$$ dinner, you can do better.

Delicious meal Greatly enjoyed the Restaurant Week lunch menu at Aquavit yesterday. I thought the artichoke soup and salmon entree were sublime, full of rich flavor with no off notes. The potato and smoked shrimp brandade (mashed potatoes) served with the salmon was incredible. The only food flaw was the spice cake, which was very dry. However, the orange sobet on the plate was an explosion of delicious flavor. One more criticism was the long wait, way past our reservation time. On the other hand, it was very pleasant to wait in the comfortable lounge and the staff was friendly, smart and helpful. I hope everyone in NY takes advantage of the $24.70 three-course Restaurant Week lunches around town. Like a fire sale on the finest food in the world.

If you've ever wanted to know exactly how many ways you could pickle herring, this is the spot for you. Oh, and you get free little bottles of aquavit to shoot back should your company need a bit of help.
